Cleansers! How Many of Us Have Them?

As you can tell by my title, I’m a little into playing on old school music greats in my writing as denoted by a play on the song “Friends” by Whodini. However, we are not gathered here today to have musical trivia, but we are here to discuss the triple threat to a good skin cleansing experience and why these steps are important.

Let’s dive right in. You won’t believe how many women I ask, “What do you cleanse your skin with?” and they reply, soap. I immediately cringe. I wish I had the hands on face emoji to place here. LOL! Most store bought soap is not formulated to take care of the skin on your face. As a matter of fact it is really not formulated to take care of the skin on your body, but that is another story. The harsh detergent found in soaps advertised to cleanse your body is stripping the natural oils from your skin and is not replacing them. Yes, you may have that squeaky clean feeling, but your skin is definitely not being nourished. Our skin needs to be nourished from the outside just as much as it does from the inside. After all, our epidermis, the outermost layer of our skin, is exposed to all of the harsh elements of the world that in turn cause dryness, over production of oil for some, clogged pores, acne, and wrinkles. All of those factors can be counteracted in a simple cleanse phase, which is the first step to a healthy skin care regimen.

Step One: Select a cleanser formulated for your skin type.

The most essential piece of knowledge you can have as it relates to skin is knowing what your skin type is. There are essentially 3 skin types: Dry, Combination, and Oily. Typically the look and feel of your skin is an easy way to diagnose that. If your skin often lacks oil and has a dullness and is not as soft to the touch, chances are, you have dry skin. If your skin is pretty well balanced and you get a slightly heavier production of oil in what is known as your t-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), then you are deemed to have combination skin. Oily skin is typically noticed due to the over production of oil, which causes acne in many cases. Neutrogena offers a quick skin type test to help you figure this out here. Of course you can also take a more professional route and visit an esthetician or dermatologist. These are all great options.

Another key component of selecting the right cleanser is determining the level of sensitivity of your skin. If you break out easily or the smallest extraction of a white head or application of a new product causes your skin to react in an adverse way, then you probably have sensitive skin and will need to start out with a cleanser developed specifically for sensitive skin.

Now that we have all of those items out of the way, it is time to select a cleanser. You want something that gets the job done, but also nourishes your skin with botanicals. A good cleanser will definitely work the crud out of those pores and restore vital nutrients as well. Just take some time to visit your local Ulta or Sephora or perhaps an esthetician or dermatologist if you need more guidance. You will definitely thank me later.

Step Two: Lather up and cleanse with intention.

Believe it or not, it is a wrong and right way to cleanse your face. One does not simply wet their face and apply product and then rinse it off. You must cleanse with intention. When cleansing your skin, you want to wet your face with lukewarm water first, this will open your pores so that the crud can be removed and the cleanser can penetrate. You will then take the amount of cleanser needed and apply it to your fingertips and then to your wet skin. You want to rub in upward and outward circular motions as this lifts and tightens the skin while cleansing. Once you’ve done about 3 minutes of cleansing, you will rinse your skin with cooler water to help close your pores.

Step Three: Get the proper tool to aid in a deeper clean.

I am an advocate for deep cleansing of the skin. It seems more companies have also caught on to this as well. Normally, we follow the regimen as described in step two, which is fine, but sometimes we need a deeper clean. This deeper clean can be achieved with a manual or electronic face brush. These tools can also help tone and tighten the skin at an accelerated rate. These brushes are normally made soft enough to be sure as not to damage the skin, but you must still be careful not to be too vigorous when utilizing these tools because that can create microscopic tears in your skin.

I prefer the Clarisonic brush. They have several types, but I currently use the MIA 2 in the Clarisonic line. They have different brush heads for different skin types to ensure you get the most beneficial clean. Another brush that is hot on the market for cleansing the skin is the Foreo Luna, which I plan to purchase as well just to see if there is a distinct difference.

If you want to go the less expensive route. Try a manual face brush from Ulta Beauty like the one here. This way you are in total control.

Just be sure to replace the brush heads and or brushes every 2 to 3 months to keep germ build up away and a fresh clean slay for the day! However, no replacement brush heads are needed for the Foreo Luna, which is a plus.

So let’s recap, determine your skin type and select a cleanser that caters to that; wash your face utilizing the proper technique, and add a skin brush for a deeper clean. There you have it, you are now equipped to slay every day with a fresh and clean face.
